Vegas - total system crash

hello mates,
since 2 hours, i finally have a fast and stable internet connection again. im happy as fuck that i can watch all the shit on youtube again and it doenst take atleast 30+ seconds to load ANY website anymore.
however, enough of that - there are worse problems im going through and i'm afraid i don't know what to do at all...
i'm currently working on 2 solo videos or to be more precise; i'm editing them.
but either vegas, my computer or the both of them have decided to be total whiny bitches.
i cannot run vegas for longer than 10-15 minutes (best case), without having the entire system crashing.
the computer is completely freezing up in the current frame. nothing is reacting and all i can do manually shutting it down.
most of the times this happens way earlier, like 1-2 minutes after starting to mess around.
it can be caused by any function in vegas; wether its just playing back unedited clips or dragging in raw video files.
my system is (hold on to your butts, lol):
pentium 4 - 3 ghz
1 gb ram
on-board shit
vegas 9.0
win XP sp3
--------------------
i really, really, badly hope somebody can help.
googling is a bummer - no results at all.

well i was using vegas 9.0 too for editing Udzakar and it was freezing like your does. I switched back to 7.0 which works sweet, no much difference from 9.0 for me except darker layout in 9 one.

Never heard of shit like that. When I read you're using Vegas 9, my face just warped. I remember having a shit load of crashes and freezes (Vegas 9 only, not the entire OS) with the German community video. Older Vegas versions can not open project files of newer ones, so I opened the thing, hit Ctrl + A, Ctrl + C, opened a new project file in Vegas 8 and pasted the content. I had to re-create the CC manually by copy-/pasting the values also, but it did the job. It didn't fuck up in Vegas 8 at all.
Messing around with core affinities is senseless as Pentiums are single core CPUs. How much RAM do you allow Vegas to use? Maybe mess around with that a bit. If only Vegas causes these fuck ups, then it should be a software problem. Just update all drivers & Windows updates.
A system restore possibly could solve the problem assuming its a software issue & you have a fitting point to chose.

Downgrade your Vegas. I recommend 8 as everyone else also does. Oh, and go to your control panel and click
Add or Remove Softwares
. Remove any unnecessary stuff or even toolbars, it can be a cause for it. I'm not sure of your problem, but I suspect CPU overload and shit like that, I've been through it. Delete anything that you aren't using or just downgrade Vegas.
In case you don't want to because of your project files (in case you used any additional FX by Sony's 9). Just open it in 8 and download the V-M plugin.
Hope it helps.

well you guys are right, its partially a hardware / CPU problem since the computer tends to freeze entirely more frequently... this fucking machine is 6-7 years old
if youre right and this is a version related problem, thats weird for me because as far as i can recall, i have never been using anything else than 9.0, maybe 8.0 for a for weeks.
im gonna try to go with 8.0 when im done with work.
are there any major things youre gonna be missing in pre-9.0 versions?
thanks for the help so far
and yes rusch, i tried messing around with the allocation of RAM to vegas but it turned out it was set to optimum already and didnt help with the crashes

Eeeeeeeh, my previous rig is also 8 years old by now, yet still runs.
And no, you won't be missing any important features in the earlier software versions. I've had bad experiences with all versions up from 9 to 12 only.
Did you try the system restore thing? Also run a virus scan, even though I assume that's quite pointless in this case. You should also monitor your temperatures and maybe clean the case + renew the thermal paste of the CPU & GPU if needed. Get tools like Goldmemory and CrystalDiskInfo to check RAM & HDD.

How often do you clean your case btw? And what exactly should I keep an eye out when it comes to RAM/HDD? :p

Irregularly, but I'd say every 3 months. I have a quite trafficked street right in front of my window and therefore a lot of dust comes into my flat. The intake fans do the rest...
GoldMemory is a diagnosis tool. It can find RAM related problems. Something like that can lead to system crashes too. And CDI gives S.M.A.R.T. (Self Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology) values. His HDD doesn't have a feature for that possibly though.
