Once you got to THUG, things went from being simple, enjoyable and fun to play to a more convoluted, awkward mess. Trick modifiers, spine transfers, hip transfers, running around on foot, driving cars - none of that shit was necessary. I understand that games have to top their predecessors to some extent, but the Tony Hawk franchise just wound up becoming desperate. The story for THUG was pretty much pointless and didn't serve the game in any way.

Just give me some nice locations, some nice challenges and a nice catalog of professional skaters to pick from - that's plenty. Throwing in some half-ass story just smacked of trying too hard to fit into a genre of some kind. The one thing that I did like about THUG was the expert challenges after you'd finished the game. It gave it a little more longevity and some of those challenges kicked your ass.

I loved all the things you hated, aside from driving cars. Was my first Tony Hawk though, I don't know what the Pro Skater games are like :P

I've played 'em all from THPS to THAW on PS1/2. My favorite gotta be THUG2 as it had the coolest and funny story in my eyes. There was also a lot of secret levels, characters and modifications already. I had hella fun playing it online when I got my hands on the PC version of it, even though I had to play with keyboard. What I really liked about the series is, that it never focused much on realism, it was just about fun challenges and cool combos. I quit playing TH games when I sold my PS2. Shame there is no newer one available for PC.

I dont know kaneda , can't remember it.

Talking about unlockables what were your favorites? I loved Spider-Man in THPS 2 , anyone remember?

Spider Man Tony Hawks Pro Skater 2

THPS 2 was full of secret places and stuff in levels too , it was awesome. I remember grinding the tree in Marseille's level and opening a secret passage lol And in School too , where you could open the gym or something... wow good times!  :P

I guess I'm one of the few here who haven't played them ALL. I just played THPS4 (which is my favorite, the soundtrack is amazing, it basically got me into metal: Iron Maiden - The Number of The Beast), THUG2 (which was also terrific), and P8 (which, as you guys said, isn't that good).
I got to admit that you guys really made me want to try them all now, especially THPS2 (from your stories).

I think 2 had Skater Heaven and the level from the original THPS, but I could be wrong. I remember that fucking school gym in THPS2 - where you had to grind down that rail and nail the gap at the same time the bell rung. Shit had me stumped for ages.

Looks like I'll have to play the THPS's again to find that Dave Mirra level - bummer

THPS4 if it hasn't been answered yet :P

Also I have plenty of favourite secret chars, like Jango Fett, Officer Dick, Olly the Homeless, Darth Maul, Kelly Slater the Surfer Dude and that Neversoft Eye Guy who had the most crappy stats. Pretty much all of the THPS3 chars were awesome.
