Amnesia the dark descent
« on: February 05, 2012, 03:32:48 PM »
Anyone playing/played it? We have been playing it with 2 friends on skype for 4 nights now and we got ONLY through half of the game ...

It's scary as hell and i wouldnt be able to play it alone tbh ... but when we are 3 its fun. telling each other what to do etc.

Also there are a lot of custom story modes, im thinking of downloading one after finishing this one. any reccommendations?  ;)

I played it a little. Got really fucking scared and just didn't play it anymore. And one night I turned of the light and got my headphones on and said to myself "Now I'm really gonna play this game, after all it's just a game, nothing to be scared about," Then I opened the game and the menu music started and I was like "Oh shit, this is serious business," and then I went down in a dark room heard a scream of some sort and was like "OH HELL NO," then I turned it off never played again

I've played through the whole game and some custom stories aswell. The game was the most scary at very beggining when I didn't know what to expect but when it went on I got to know stuff and was really fun to play even if still scary at times. I've played this alone though, no skype mates or so. Just gotta tell ya there are more than one ending so you gotta make choices of how you want it to end.

About the custom stories, some of them are actually really awesome, some are weird. I've been playing some when talking to Kai on skype and hell, I didn't know what to expect from the mods makers AT ALL so it was damn creepy. Countless times me screaming to the microphone like an idiot and Kai just lauhging  . Of course he didn't have the balls to try the game himself lol. Don't really remember which mods I've played, just know 'The Dark Room' is a must play. :P You'll figure out why. Some mods though are fucking hard/creepy I've got to start them and never finished them.

Overall I think the game does its purpose well and also serves some little bit of fun with solving puzzles/surviving. For the people who think this kind of game is more funny than scary: turn your light off, get headphones and play alone. The soundtrack will drive you insane, not to mention some stuff appearing on the screen. :P Obviously when you'll keep thinking it's just a game you won't get scared and it won't be as satisfying to complete. Try to think you're in the skin of the character. ;)

Amnesia is so dull, slowpaced and boring. Once you get into a close-encounter with one of the monsters and get a good look at them they're not really scary at all.

I'd recommend playing FEAR 1 and Call Of Cthulhu, both games have some insanely exhilirating and terrifying moments.

Wont bash Amnesia too much though, had some good laughs playing it with mates, but it gets tiring and frustrating after a while. Tbh I found the Penumbra series to be better than Amnesia, but still not the scariest game I've played.

never played this shit and i hope i won't begin playing it :ninja: some videos scared the shit out of me. thank god i have no wii. because i saw some videos about "Ju On The Grudge"(only available for wii) where that fucking scary girl pursuits you through the fucking whole game. i think it's even more scary than amnesia.

my problem is, i always want to play scary games, and when i do, i can't sleep at night. then i'm like FFFUUUUUU.

I just had to get to this topic. I have the game. I don't play it very often, but when I do... well.. I'm scared. :| Very fun game nonetheless.

Isn't it more funny than scary? I just don't get it
That depends on how you behave. If you're alone in a dark room (at night @_@) with headphones on, you're gonna piss your panties. If you're with others and you're like HAHAHAH LOL then it's funny. I combine both of them because I'm god.

lol, beer is like liquid courage, it's tons scarier when completely sober.

Anyway, I love this game. I beat it about a year ago, and it was really satisfying. The tension caused by the in-game sounds is so intense. It scares me more than any jumpscare on its own. Also, playing in a dark room makes a huge difference.

I would always be like "man, I want to play some Amnesia, I'm not scared", and then as soon as I open the game and hear the music at the main menu I'm like "oh god, what am I doing".

Haha, so true. The soundtrack itself is like 80% of the scare factor IMO. Also the weirdo trips of Daniel make it pretty creepy at times. I haven't played other games of this kind but I think Amnesia's success is that you can't fight the monster, the only ways are to run or hide. The character is really powerless compared to them, sometimes when I heard one of them incoming to my room, I could spend 5 minutes straight in the closet without being able to get out and see if it's gone.

Call Of Cthulhu is scarier imo, Amnesia scares you now and then, but this game keeps you scared all the time.

Hmm. I was thinking of playing Penumbra with mates on skype after we finish Amnesia ... I think it is scary and also a big factor of it is all the screen moving and shit like bugs on the screen, glow etc. Although the Call of Cthulhu sounds great too.

FEAR wasn't scary at all, lol

I've played FEAR and that wasn't scary at all. Amnesia was far more worse for me, not that the monsters scared me that much but I felt like everything was on the line and it was dark and the music did SO much for the game. And the fact that you don't really have anything to defend yourself makes is 50x times worse. The only thing FEAR did scary was some cutscenes/scripted scenes that made you jump because suddenly there was a bloody face in your screen. Scary movie type of scary, that's not scary :|

Guess it's down to difference of opinion then, seeing as not being able to defend yourself in Amnesia I find pretty annoying since the escaping isn't complex at all, you just either run away the way you came or bug the monster behind something.
FEAR however, is scary as hell. FEAR 2 and 3 were pretty lame due to the fact that Monolith moved away from the horror genre and focused on making a generic and "cool" shooter. FEAR 1 still got it though, never been more frightened by a computer game than I were when Alma kept jumping me in airvents or when I was escaping Paxton and his supersoldiers.
