Don't think so  The skins folder does not respond to .jpg's or .png's. Could be wrong about the .png though. And that is needed for a transparent skin because there is no alpha layer.

If you extract the player.txd and open it with TXD workshop you can import/export images in PNG, BMP and TGA format.
