Inception: an interesting interpretation
« on: January 01, 2012, 06:25:21 AM »
Authors@Google: Kyle Johnson 'Inception and Philosophy'

There are allot of people here who like Inception and some people who like to ponder over the meaning of certain movies. So I stumbled upon this google talk about inception that goes about 4 layers deep into the meaning of the movie.

If it's very complicated, it doesn't meant that the movie is good but inception was good.

If there is such complexity behind the plot, the director could have made it a bit more approachable (so that the movie hints towards it more).

It's overly in-depth. The movie is very straight-forward, and I don't believe it has as many layers as that explanation alludes to. Inception is basically an action film - just a very well-written one. I like Inception, but as a story it's not exactly extraordinary, and not nearly as complex as it could have been if handled wrong.

I agree with kaneda and I expect a new religious movement, something like Inceptionism (similar to http://matrixism.org/).

Come on dude, Inception is just a mainstream crap with a slightly better story than usual in the modern Hollywood film industry.

Inception sure was a great movie, and I myself thought the ending was a bit disappointing (would've thought it would be way better if the thing kept spinning) so this theory was very intriguing. Though the guy really gets on my nerves, he is so over-enthusiastic it's hard to think of him as an objective person. This becomes even more clear when he just shoves The King's Speech off as a movie about some English monarch learning to speak. I could say the same about Inception being some movie about dreaming and reality. He also seems quiet the Nolan fan so that just made it a little bit harder to accept everything he said.

Still he brought up some very interesting points and some of the best perceptions I have seen so far which definitely make the movie a lot more interesting.

@Kaneda and Arnax: that seems a bit like a form of denial to me. Just shoving everything he said off as an over-analyses and basically making him out to be a bit off a 'madman'. This isn't just your go-to action movie, that's bullcrap. Sure it seems like it is, but of course there is more story behind it and more depth into it. Every movie, every piece of art has more depth and the main point of art is that you are free to interpret it, though the maker always has his/her own thought behind it.

Word, altough Mainstream doesn't mean it's bad but it's definitely overrated.

@Genyus: Yeah, you're free to interpret a work of art any way you see fit - but it doesn't make you right. Organising some kind of lecture or presentation outlining your interpretation of a work just smacks of someone who does think they're right. I don't believe I made him out to be anything but a tad over-analytical, which is the impression I got.

And I don't see as deeply into movies, to be honest. They're works of art, and some have messages and meanings that go a little deeper than what's on screen. I just don't believe Inception is an example of that. Nor do I see Nolan as being that type of film-maker. Pretty much all of his movies have been fairly straight-forward action thrillers. They're very busy films, yeah, but the information given to the viewer is so clear and concise that nothing is really left unsaid. That's the beauty of his films - they're not trying to be anything other than well told yarns.

The movie had a great idea, but the producers made it pretty complicated so you can't understand the plot if you don't concentrate 100% - such movies I don't like. Anyway, I'm gonna watch this when I get home for sure.
