I can't explain it better than this...

A small gap is a "hole" in your path which is really small so it's not easy to pass through it with a bike (or with a car, then the hole is a little bigger).

For example, you have two poles on the road which are relatively close.

Exactly, that's one example. But it doesn't have to be two poles, it can be any small space which is hard to go through.
