New gaming rig
« on: June 11, 2011, 06:37:48 AM »
Yes, I am going to put together a new gaming rig for myself with a budget of about 8000 swedish crowns which is around 800 euros.

This might seem like a pointless topic but I've put together parts that I think will be fine but I'm really not sure about the parts.

(Note that the type of parts I haven't added are parts I already have such as HDD, soundcard, etc... In other words, the parts that are there are the kind of parts I need)

List:

What I am looking to achieve with this topic is your opinions or advices.

Thanks
/Davve

The graphics card would bottleneck the CPU a little, I would suggest a GTX570 if you are willing to pay just a little more. Oh, and if you're not using a downwards blowing CPU cooler, you should get a 50mm fan for the northbridge to get tons better cooling on the motherboard (not a necessity at all, but recommended).

Overall, it's a very, very good system.

Thanks for your thoughts, you proved a few good points. I'll try to do the best I can with the money I have to get the best possible PC. Once again, thank you!

I'm actually getting this rig so I can listen to Tool with 6000 music players at the same time.

sabertooth is kinda gimmicky and dumb, but its a decent board, although asus p67 boards are plagued with a lot of issues
I'd recommend a high end gigabyte instead

go with a single 4gig stick of 1333mhz ram if you only need 4gig, you wont notice the speed difference and ram doesnt matter much on SB anyway

get the k version so you can overclock your i7, no-brainer here

the tx v2 is an awesome psu

Yeah, I didn't notice you chose the 2600 non-k version (inb4 Mugetsu and his K-ON anime again...). IF you're overclocking... actually, regardless of what you're doing, you should get the 2600K just because the price is like what... 10 euros more? And if you're selling it later on, more people are gonna be interested in a processor with an unlocked multiplier, rather than one that doesn't overclock at all. :P

The Sandy Bridge processors run relatively cool, and they overclock easily (just keep in mind, you're gonna need a good aftermarked cooler if you plan on overclocking. Intel's stock coolers suck).

@ Radiaktive: The Sabertooth isn't gimmicky, the "thermal armor" actually does show cooling improvement with the thermal armor on (w/ a 50mm fan of course). Plus, it's made with military standard components, so it handles heat relatively well.

I never make the same joke twice. I'm surprised you failed in that aspect.

its extremely gimmicky, thermal armor so some caps can run 3-4deg cooler?
it doesnt even come with a fan to make it work halfway decent

msi also does that military testing crap, its just marketing lingo for a higher standard of components

all in all if you like that fugly hunk o crap thats fine with me, but any decent case with some airflow would be fine for a normal board

literally the only positive thing I could mention is the warranty for sabertooth boards, they have to give you something for your money right?

Personally, I would prefer any of the P8P67 boards, but what I'm saying is that the Sabertooth isn't necessarily a bad board. Still, it's the first board to use a shield to improve airflow, so that might even be improved later on newer boards, who knows? :P
