3ds Max = Bitch!
« on: May 27, 2011, 03:45:26 AM »
So as you can see from the topic's title, yes 3ds Max is a bitch!

I've been experiencing some problems with it and I could use your help as I've been unable to fix the problem myself. I have searched on google and went through their help pages, but nothing worked.

So, after having installed Autodesk 3ds Max 2010 32-bit, when I try to run it I ALWAYS get the following error:
"A software problem has caused 3ds Max to close unexpectedly."
I have installed different versions and "bought" different copies of the program but no success, same error.

Has anybody had this experience before? Does anybody have a solution or just general help tips to fix it? I am running on Windows XP Sp3 btw, so no running as administrator.
Also remember that you are helping yourself if you help me, since I am using the program to make a very usable mod for GTA LC.  :euro:

OK, what OS are you using, and what's your hardware spec?

I think that would be more of a system issue... do you know anyone else who can run it on exactly same system?

System as in operative system? Here's the funny thing; 3ds max ran perfectly on my computer before I upgraded it so it has better specs. It seems my new specs won't allow the program to run.

In my experience XP has trouble running 2010, you may have to think about acquiring 2009.

Alright, will see if I can find a copy of the 2009 version. Hopefully it'll work with KAM's .dff script.
Thanks for the tip!

Not system issue, i have Windows 7, Geforce 9500GT, 4GB Ram, AMD Athlon X2 II 240 2.8GhZ, works perfectly, i would say, that you need 2011 3DS max, i use 2011

The 32-bit version of Max 2011 software is supported by any of the following operating systems:
XP Professional (SP3 or higher) operating system

Windows Vista
Business (SP2 or higher) operating system

7 Professional  operating system

Okay I installed 3ds max 2009 and it works. KAM's script works as well, but now I have another stupid problem. 3ds max 2009 cannot export as a .3ds file, it will only export as a .max file. I cannot use those as the Colleditor II only takes .3ds files. Is there any way to make 3ds max 2009 export as .3ds files?

much lulz :P I've only used 3ds max 9 *whichever year that is.. 07 I think?* and I have 2011 but I didn't use it for long.

also you're talking about saving it rather than exporting it, if you save a scene, you get the option for .max and some others *I think?* but if you go down the list of things the file drop down gives you, you'll see "export" which will export the entire scene or just what you've selected

Just remember, 3ds max is such a complex program that random errors like the one at the start of the threat just happen to show up from time to time, usually "buying" a different year version is the way to fix that :) although if it's an error with the program not working properly, IE exported models with deleted faces *like my 1st max did* then getting a new copy of the same year will usually fix that

You didn't answer my question. D:

I already said I have tried many others, it probably runs up to about 7 different ones. This one is the only one working, and it only wants to save as a .max file which is utterly useless.

I ask again, is there a way I can convert a .max file to a .3ds file?
Is there a 3ds max out there that works on windows XP SP3 that can save as .3ds file?

Ok everything works now. Downloaded some sort of upgrade / update thing. It can export as .3ds now.

Close this topic please.

MAKE ME!

naww, I will <3 and I did answer it, or so I thought.. saving and exporting are 2 different things, .MAX is a save file where as .3ds is an export file. however it seems you had export missing or something 0.0

PS: For those of you who don't have $50,000 just lying around to "buy" these programs, have trial and error etc, there are free versions like Gmax *a free version of 3ds max* I believe blender is also free although kams won't work with it so you can't export for gta, you can however export .3ds, open that in either Gmax or Zmodeler 1 *another free modeling program* then export for gta :)

luckily however, we're all rich and can therefor legally buy 7 different versions of 3ds max.
