Best Albums of all time
« on: December 29, 2010, 06:32:40 AM »
I'm curious to see what you guys like. DC you're welcomed to post your top 10 here so I can steal your musical tastes. :P

My personal favorite is Tool - Lateralus (2001). It's like it came from space, no weak points, at all.
The number of listens for this album says everything about it, around 50 million plays on youtube, 18 million plays on last.fm.

Recommended tracks, all of them but especially:
- Lateralus (top 10 songs ever made, the ending climax is godly, superb lyrics)
- Reflection (very mysterious, grabs you into a trance from the beginning and doesn't let you go until it ends, superb lyrics)
- Schism (creppy and catchy, superb lyrics)

Honorable mentions:
Tool - Aenima (1996), 10,000 Days (2006), Undertow (1993)
Pink Floyd - Division Bell (1994), Wish You Were Here (1975) - I wish I was there... :(
Cynic - Traced in Air (2008)
Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin IV (1971)
The Tallest Man on Earth - The Wild Hunt (2010)
Opeth - Ghost Reveries (2006), Blackwater Park (2001), Still Life (1999)
Rush - Moving Pictures (1981)
Tori Amos - Little Earthquakes (1991), Scarlet's Walk (2002) you will like them only if you're a girl
A Perfect Circle - Thirteenth Step (2003)
Deftones - White Pony (2000)
Katatonia - The Great Cold Distance (2006), Night is The New Day (2009)

EDIT: I forgot about Sigur Ros. :(
Sigur Ros - ( ) (2002), Takk (2006), Agaetis Byrjun (1999)

Ok I guess I'll go on the albums that influenced me the most:

1. The Chemical Brothers - Dig Your Own Hole

This album was the soundtrack to my childhood. Every time I listened to it I discovered a new layer in the songs composition. Exit Planet Dust is a very, very close second to this.

2. Primal Scream - XTRMNTR

Controversial, psychopathic and violent in the most beautiful ways. Screamadelica, is also close second.

3. Rage Against The Machine - Rage Against The Machine

It's definitive. That's all that needs be said.

4. Leftfield - Rhythm And Stealth

Dynamic, innovative and always mind blowing. They remain my second favorite electronic artist. Leftism is a close second too.

5. Death In Vegas - The Contino Sessions

Aisha is permanently engraved into my consciousness. I struggle to describe their music, and more than anything thats what I love. Scorpio rising as honorable mention.

6. The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses

Faded and succinct, never fails to enchant me.

7. Autechre - Amber

Organic, flawless and touching music, in its most minimal form. Further rips me to pieces every time.

8. The Prodigy - Fat Of The Land

Defined electronica for a lot of people. Introduced big beat into the mainstream. Influential beyond belief.

9. Daft Punk - ???

Ask any hardcore Daft Punk fan about their favorite album, and chances are you'll be met with a splutter of "oh god...I dunno...like...all of them". I'm no different.

10. Oasis - Definitely Maybe

Britpop at it's prime.

-

Like I said, I can't really say the best overall. I haven't experience all music so that would be hard. But these are a lot of the ones that influenced me the most. Just remember I'm a 90s kid growing up in Britain :P

Best albums of all time? Meh, there are so many which were considerable changing the music industry.

But tbh, Thrice - Beggars is my all time favourite because it's the only album where i LOVE all songs.

//Oh forgot this one

Mogwai - Mr. Beast
Comes really close after beggars, masterpiece.

John mayer - Continuum. Great album, and that guy is probably one of the only pop musicians who know hows how to play his instrument.. Kinda makes me a little happy coming from a family of jazz musicians :P

Red hot chili peppers - by the way
Mostly because I listened to that album at a hard period in my life - makes me nostalgic.

AAAAAND some jazz I guess. Cant really remember anything specific right now, because mostly my dad just puts on vinyls or cds and I listen, and I dont know the albums name just whos playing. Cannonball adderley quintet really rocks though.

Oh yeah - Beatles - rubber soul.

There are easily more than a hundred albums where I love every single song... the challenge of picking just a few is overwhelming. Anyway I'll get back to this, though I'm probably gonna write which albums I've listened to the most over the years, as what I "love most" is really hard to decide on, plus it depends on what I'm in the mood for.

Edit: By the way it's a great idea for a topic, I'll be checking it regularly ^^

It's very hard to fairly measure which albums are in the very top of my musical tastes because not only that there is so many I love listening to, but there's so much more music that I am aware of to be brilliant and still didn't have time to listen trough it. I might comeback to this topic and name a few that really touched me later.
