What makes me a good editor [SA]?
« on: July 29, 2010, 05:56:09 AM »
If I was a good editor I wouldn't be sitting here discussing it with you now would I? (who gets the refference gets a cookie)
Anyway I always wondered what a good edited SA needs as I am so inexperienced it's not even funny :P
Questions to you:
Which frame-rate should I record on? It has always been the most trouble to me, if you could explain how to do it, I'd be more grateful then a kid who gets a cookie :>
Also where do I insert the CC in vegas?
Any specific record settings like AA and stuff like that to make the video look better?
Freeplay yes/no?

Thanks in advance : >

Demoman reference, cookies plawks.

There are many methods for framerates, but the one I'm using is - record at 15 fps, then speed the video up 1.666x in vegas.
You can add effects to a whole video layer by dragging them to the layer's 'base'. Get all the effects you need, place all your clips on the layer(s) with the effects - boom, you got a cc.
You should keep your graphic settings at the maximum your PC can handle while maintaining the fps needed to record the stuff (in my case, 15-20 fps will be fine).
If you can use it good, then yes. Don't use it for random stucked views, or to fill up every empty segment of the video with the 'cinematic view'.

Topic is about SA, so you should go for 25FPS. If your hardware can handle it, set 25FPS straightly in Fraps. When your hardware is too weak I suggest to record on stable 10FPS, just set it in Fraps. When you import the clips into Vegas, simply change the playing speed to 250% and it got those smooth 25FPS again.

The easiest way to insert a CC is to bind the effects to the whole video layer. On the layer's left is the same green cross-like button which is upon every clip you import. Just add the wanted effects with values there and it'll get applied to every clip which lays on that layer. But watch out, some clips ma will look too bright/dark concerning different map areas. You can correct it a little with keyframes on the layer's effects or just add the effect again and reduce the effect there.

I'd suggest you to check your GFX card's panel. SA just allows 3xAA, but on the card's panel you can go for it's maximum. Same goes for AF, resolution, visual fx, draw distance, w/e. Also watch out that the resolution and format of your planned video matches the one of the source clips. Changing is possible, but I'd just suggest that only to 4:3 monitor users.

Personally I don't mind freeplay. You can make some nice stuff with it, but do not overwhore it. Using it on every stunt is annoying, also the static cams shouldn't be too far or have weird setups. The actual stunt should still be noticeable.

Sry for double posting, but I'm a gobshite on that.

Thats actually also a way, BUT you won't have 25,00000000000....... FPS. Some frames will be screwed (frame overlay). You'd just have 24,9999999999.... :euro:

grab a nice song and try to create an atmosphere considering the stuntorder, camangles/cammovement, CC, transitions and the speed of the song
imo 2 freeplay viewings in a vid is enough, as rusch said dont overuse it ...

/e: oh and try to create something unique

Rusch69 had the points there, although I wouldn't ask "what me makes me a good editor", instead you should wonder what makes the videos that are well-edited so good.

As for the recording you should max out all the Anti-Aliasing and Anisotropic filtering-settings from your GFX Control Panel, record at 25fps and have the outcome rendered at 25fps. I don't personally move the cam around too much but that's your call, as far as you can clearly see the stunt it's fine.

Color correction's are in my opinion the most important add when watching a video. I like videos even if there's no syncing or no effects used if the CC's are good. Mess around with the settings and try to make something unique.

Syncing and effects... Try to come up with at least some syncing, it doesn't even have to include an effect in case you don't like adding them. As for a simple sync effect I personally recommend using the "Soft Flash" from the Vegas stock Transitions, I like it.

A bit underestimated part is the rendering, try to come up with at least few different renders, I'd say one MQ (Xvid) for those who don't have the hardware to play anything heavier, and HQ (Xvid) for those who have, and a Matroska-render for those who like quality. As you know there are tutorials for the renders on the Video Editing Tutorials section, and it only takes a few hours with a decent PC to render one.

Good luck with the editing, definately going to review your next editing in case you take these tips we gave seriously. :)

Edit: Seems like I forgot to talk about the song but actually there's no tips to give since it's about your taste, but I think that rarely song is "already" good, I think that watchable editing and stunting makes the song good. For example if you have a good song in a boring video which you won't watch more than once it's not likely that you'll start liking the song as much as if you have a kickass video which people will watch pretty often and start liking the song by time. For example I'm often listening to artists/bands whose song were used in video that I often watch.

Make the videos visual appearance good and the song will most likely be liked too.

I was actually using the same method as PtRvY until I got a better PC, except with multiplying by 1.6, not 1.66666`

Don't get me wrong but I personally think 24FPS looks way smoother than 25  I got no clue why but...try it out. You will see.

And if your pc is really bad like mine, you can try to record at 10fps and then speed it up to 2.5 in Vegas  :a-cheer:

Rusch&PtRvY: You can also record at 15fps, speed it in vegas 2.000 and render in 30fps, it looks better.  :ajaja:
