People hate it because of the trailer, just look at it, the ego of the producers is off the charts.
Personally I think the first movie is below average, a 3.5/10, it wasn't scary or interesting at all, and I bet the second won't be either.

Done, Reuiem for a Dream was one of the worst movies I ever saw. Paranormal Activity was pretty awesome I love how unprofessional it looks and even though they put only few thousand dollars to create the movie, they made tons of money...

The only horror I liked was Drag Me To Hell, but it didn't scared me, I only liked it cause it was funny and entertaining.

Se7en was pretty scary.
Thrillers are more scary than horrors imo, because horrors only try to scare you with some cliched scenes, but certain thrillers stay in your head for years.
