alright, so I have a 2 year old PC that doesnt cut it anymore.....I want to get some high end shit..... lets say I'm willing to put $1,500 into upgrading....I'm gonna need some suggestions

my current specs:

Asus P5N-E SLI Motherboard
nVidia 8800 GTS gfx card
2gb ram
2 TB Memory (3 physical drives)
Core 2 duo 6600 @ 2.40ghz

Go for the third configuration, although with the spare money you could change the GPU to HD 5870. Click here for a review of the HD 5870, it'll kick ass at least for the next few years.

How's your monitor by the way? You may not need a card as good as HD 5870 unless you're dealing with at least 24" one.

What the hell... No, don't even think about the Extreme-series end of Intel's CPU's, and I also have no idea why you should take an external HDD.

Why to go for that? I'm not the one to tell you what to buy since I'm well aware of obsessions many people have when it comes to hardware, but going for nVIDIA's older cards ain't just a good buy no more. Least you could do is wait for the Fermi series in case you don't want to get ATi's cards.

The Radeon HD 5870 1GB is our pick for the Premium Player PC. We'd opt for one of these over the largely overpriced, very hot dual-GPU Radeon HD 5970 2GB as well. I never said it's bad, but you can overclock i7 920 (four times cheaper) to match the same level of performance.

Not saying the GTX280 is bad, it just doesn't have DirectX11, which your new card should have if you really want it to last for a while Although there aren't that many DX11 games out there, I bet there are gonna be a few in the future which you would want to play. + NVidia has stopped the manufacturing process of some of the GTX2** cards already as far as I know.
Buuut..personally I wouldn't buy a HD5*** card now, The GTX470 and GTX480 are coming out in March, which means:

You could get one of thoose

or

If thoose are too expensive for you, you can still get one of ATI HD5*** cards, because thoose prizes are sure going to drop massively when NVidia has released their DX11 cards.


So If I were you I'd be getting this:


Keep the other stuff, also keep you 8800GTS for a while and wait as I said. I included the Megahalems since I consider overclocking something you really should do with an i7, such a high potential there.

Thats some good advice KM, the set up you suggested I can get it through amazon at a much lower price than it said in the picture you posted... I think im gonna Buy that for now and wait for the 470 or 480...
