Judging people by the music they listen to
« on: November 09, 2008, 01:06:33 PM »
Is it right? Is it wrong? To what extent can you determine what a person is like knowing their musical taste?

I take alot of shit from my close friends by doing this, they say i have predjudice and i do agree a bit with them but also they see how most of the times i'm right. For example someone who listens to britney spears or rhianna definitely lives a flashy , sometimes superficial existance with questionable moral values (ok maybe im taking it too far) whereas someone who listens to indie/rock for example is more laid back and less shallow.

There aren't any set rules and it doesnt say that much about a person's native inteligence or character but i think it reveals quite alot about ones upbringing, lifestyle and values.

Seriously, music taste is starting to be as touchy of a subject as religion nowadays.

Of course it isn't right, judging people by music is as bad as judging by religion.

I think your a fgt because you listen to oasis. It's not true, but that's pretty much what your doing, innit?

Look this isn't complicated at all.  You say people who listen to Brittany Spears live a more superficial existence.  Maybe that's true.  But could it be that superficial people relate to the superficial lyrics that Spears puts out?  Music is all about being able to relate.  It's not uncommon for entire groups of friends to listen to the same type of music because they are all friends (they can relate to each other and therefore also relate to the type of music they listen to).

I think a lot of the time it can tell you what kind of person someone is. A lot of the time it cant, too.

Blah put it really well, it's finding music you can relate. Some people are just more fans of music than others. Some just listen to whatever is popular nowadays. Others dig deeper and find all of those bands that, unfortunately, don't reach the Top 100.. or whatever.

I like to stress the importance of being yourself. I don't think it's really that cool to be listening to whatever is popular unless you really do like it. Relating to the music is crucial for me at times, other times not.

But to discuss the question at hand, no, I think it's wrong. Sure, I think most of the popular music out there today sucks, but then again, those same kids could be saying that stuff about my tunes as well. But, it's just a matter of preference, and really says nothing about the kind of person they are. Beliefs are one thing, but taste is another.

PS - Shouldn't this be in the music section?

Loud and dynamic music kills dark toughts.

Btw, there are some people that dislike all kinds of music, what does that say about their characters?

I dont think it's the same thing - regarding the first sentence

As for the second, im not saying you're a faggot or stupid or w/e for listening to metal, i'm saying you wear black band tshirts all the time, hardly ever go out, have a haircut of questionable sexuality etc

i'm not killin anyone here, im just making minor assumptions

Also, this isnt in the music section cause i think it's about people, not music or musicians.

Judging them can have two different meanings:

1: "You listen to metal, omg you must be a fucking emo gtfo!" I dislike that kind of judging, people can like whatever music/wear whatever clothes they want to, and others shouldn't care at all. If you look for someone with the same taste, go to a concert of a music style you like.

2: "He listens to reggae so he seems like the kind of guy who is chill and can be relaxing to hang out with and smoke some weed." That kind of judging is okay because you don't write someone down negatively on what they like.
