Note to a passing Moderator - Not all torrents are illegal, so let us just leave this topic open please, I could use some help of the general populace. Google comes up empty, the search is too general so Google has nothing relevant. the one I am using is freeware where the only way to get the application is through torrenting.

When I start up bittorrent and start my torrent up, it'll go great...for 5 minutes. I'll get speeds of up to 40 kb/s, then everything will start going lower and slowly creeping back down, until there is no more download speed, and the ETA = "Infinity"

I've tried several different torrents and each goes great for 5 minutes, starts climbing, and drops down.

My specs:

Windows XP Home (I know vista shuts some of this out, but I'm on XP)
Internet - Probably around 7 megabits per second, wireless cable.
SMC EZ Connect (Model No. SMC2662W)

I don't think that wireless is such a good idea for torrents...

Use the cable, and possibly a new client (I for one, use Azureus).

Doesn't matter good Sir  I'm using a wireless network and uTorrent, everything works great. You just have to make sure that the ports the torrentapplication uses are forwarded to your computer (should be able to change this in your routers settings), or you're going to get crappy speeds or nothing at all.

This is how it looks with my router:

Actually have a few more ports open (6881 to 6999) cause I think that was the standard torrent ports or whatever.

Try out µTorrent, ABC or Azureus, the most common ones. Also, try out some torrent's with a lots of seeds from some public trackers, just to be sure that the problem ain't on the source you're downloading from.

Use utorrent. Once your download is started right click the torrent and set Bandwidth Allocation to High and right click again and click force start. I usualy get 100+kbs at the start, sometimes going up to 500kb/s if its a great torrent.

Need to forward ports an configure the connection properly. Go to www.portforward.com, find your router brand/model an there should be a guide for configuring uTorrent with it. Also when choosing your port, its probably worth going for one in the 50000-60000 area as apparently these aren't monitored as much as the lower level ones.

Heh, client won't make a difference, depends on the ports (forwarded / not forwarded) the tracker (seeders / leechers ratio) and the tracker speed.

I don't use forwarded ports.

1) I bet you can if you tried..
2) Why do you think you can't?
