My computer broke down

IMy computer won't load Windows XP. I've tried in safe mode but it stops loading on a file called SPTD.sys. Can anyone think of a way to fix it?

doesnt sound gd if safe mode aint workin, youll probably have to reformat. if you got any info you need on the HDD take it out of the case and put it in an external and run it on another computer.

Well I'm using a laptop so taking out the HDD isn't a great idea for me. Besides, I already backed up the important stuff. How do you reformat the HDD?

You might have to edit your bios for it to check the CD before windows or if theres a boot menu when you startup(mine is F12, should say somewhere on the screen) check boot from DVD drive or CD drive, whatever it says.

Still doesn't work. It enters Windows Setup, then it says "Setup is loading "xxx". Then it says "Setup is starting Windows" and it stays that way. How long does it take for it to start Windows because I might just be too impatient.

You could also see if your laptop came with a partitioned harddrive that has a recovery program or whatever. My compaq had one and I think my current one had one before I formated it.

No it didn't come with a partitioned harddrive. I left it on that screen all night and it didn't turn on. And yes the disc is in the machine lol
