Home server question.
« on: July 24, 2008, 09:52:14 PM »
Whenever I get a job I plan on turning my current computer into a home server. Which means I'll allow anyone on our network to access it and store shit. But I also wanna host servers on it, like samp, gunz, or maplestory. And also let people download through it. So would these specs be alright or would I have to upgrade it more?

Operating System: Windows XP Professional (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 3 (2600.xpsp.080413-2111)
Processor: AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3600+,  MMX,  3DNow (2 CPUs), ~1.9GHz
Memory: 958MB RAM
DirectX Version: DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)
Card name: NVIDIA GeForce 6150 LE
Graphics Memory: 256.0 MB

I'm planning on buying an 8800 for it. But i'll prolly remove that when I turn it into a server.
Also would I need more cooling in it? I only got two fans that i'm aware of in it right now. There might be a fan hidden under that big black thing thats over my CPU. >_>

Get a better processor to begin with, Around 3 Ghz on the processor, Be nice and tell what Socket your processor is on and I will try to find a processor for you.
(Recommending Intel processors but you can try AMD to if you don't want to spend to much money)
Graphic cards dosen't play such a big role in making servers as far as I know, So I think you will be good.
Get more Ram memory, try 2 gig ram to be sure (Also depends on what speeds your RAM-sockets can handle. Show in PCxxxx format).  But there is not only Computer specs that plays a role in making a server. You need to have secure connections and decent Broadband speed up/down.

I would suggsest you get a 100 Mbit Down/up Broadband. But it should be over 24 Mbit.

Overall.

I would like to see a more detailed list of your hardware.

I need to see what motherboard you use, what Processor socket it has. If it can use AMD or Intel processors.
I need to see what RAM-Memory your computer can use, also need to see what speeds the RAM-sockets can handle (aka PCxxxx format). As I said I need to get a more detalied list of your hardware.

About the fans, I recommend you have 3-4 fans.

Overall a more detailed list of wishes, budget, hardware and uses would be nice to see.

I will try to help you as good as I can

EDIT: If you have msn I can bring a dialog with you where I will try to Recommend hardware for your server.

Also remember one thing, what a guy says dosen't always have to be right. What I recommend is based on my experience with computers.

You should remove videocard and soundcard when turning it into a server, use a terminalsoftware to control it - try to reduce power usage as much as possible (And put a more stable operating system on it - my XP even destroys itself after not even running a single month).
Also you have to ask your ISP wether they allow what you plan. Some ISP have strict rules, for example, my host only allows me to have a given upload rate ratio in a month - they can just kill my connections and still ask for money if it gets too high. Also you could run into problems with the amount of ports used - my ISP set a maximum of 5.000 opened ports afaik. Other ports are not connected until another one is closed.

That 8800 would be a waste of money without a better processor. I found that out the hard way  That card is very cpu dependent so you'll only notice a tiny increase in performance because of it.

My ISP has unlimited upload and download a month.

Thats what they usually say, but they still limit their service in some way. An average user might have a upload of 1 - 10GB a month. Yours could easily grow alot bigger which would also stress your ISP's server.

I guess, I hardly upload so I havn't really tested it. But before when my retarded brother was on a "downloading spree" we usualy downloaded around 40-60GBs a month. =/
And now we've forced him to stop or he wont have any internet at all.

But whatever I'll prolly just give the comp to my cousin maybe. He's been wanting a computer. lol

To find out the info about what your motherboard can't do and do check up what motherboard you have and show us the info on it, and by that I mean everything, check the companys website and check the info about it.

To make it easy just tell us the name of the motherboard and the companys name (the ones who did it).

It's very very easy to install a processor, okay some is harder than others.

But mostly if you buy it in a box you get a guide. And mostly the processor comes with already applied cool-cream (or what's it called in english). Mostly you just need to put the processor in the socket the right way then put the fan above.

If you are very bad in montering a computer and are very unsure on how to do it then I have to suggsest you seek someone more skilled or some computer service guy.

But you can save money on doing it yourself.

Depends on how much shit you want to run on it at once, if you want to use it for a file server, RAM and a processor aren't much of a problem, if you want to run all of that stuff simultaneously then you may want to look into it. Also, if you're really serious about it, fibre optic back bone (from the server to the router)

I really doubt its worth investing the $400+ for QC etc. If he's just gonna be running a game server occasionally and a low-usage file server it should be fine with a small upgrade rather than a complete overhaul.

That's what I was thinking. >_>
I don't think i'd want a quad core for something thats prolly just gonna be for me + keiren to dick around in or me to host a TS server or some shit.
