Many different things you could use. I usually just stick with:
http://www.divx.com/
Can play avi files in WMP then.

http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_lite_codec_pack.htm
Get this Codec pack, should have everything to satisfy your needs.
I got the basic version which works very well.

I thought Windows Media Player runs .avi without any codecs or plugins? Didn't notice it but I have those codecs but not to play .avi's.
EDIT: didn't check the dates, sorry. Won't matter it's only in the Computer section I guess?

AVI is just a container format - the file author decides which codec to use, so a DivX file can be an avi file. Even wmv and mpeg can be avi files.
madman gave a good link though - Its a pack of some popular codecs which are used in avi files and therefore you have a wider range of avi files you can open.
