Anyone have black screen after new RAM
« Reply #15 on: March 07, 2008, 06:13:45 AM »
When you add ram the screen will be black for a longer period of time because the bios is reconfiguring itself for the new ram. I trust you waited longer than 5 seconds? You did unplug the power from the power supply or turned the rocker switch on the PSU to off before you played with the ram? Unless you do that, there is still power to the board when the computer is turned off. People have fried their boards and "saw sparks and heard pops" installing ram in a computer than had power on the board. Look for the J5 jumper on the motherboard. It's tiny and consists of 3 pins with a jumper on the 1-2 pins. With your power unplugged pull the jumper off the 1-2 pins and put it on the 2-3 pins for 15-20 seconds then move it back to the 1-2 pins. Try it with the old ram in only. If you sucessfully boot up then turn puter off unplug the power and pull the old ram out and try it with just the new stick in. If it doesn't boot then you either have a bad stick of ram or a stick that isn't compatible with your board. Some ram is high-density. It has all its chips on one side of the stick. Boards with Intel chipsets do not support high-density ram. If it boots with the new ram in then try adding the old ram. Some computers have 2 ram slots and the computer supports 512MB max with 256 MB per slot. I figure you sw it on crucial that you could run 512 sticks thou. May want to check the motherboards bios page. altho bios is usually upgraded for newer cpus it is sometimes upgraded to solve ram compatibility issues too.If you have been clicking out of startup only after about 5 seconds of black screen then give it more time. May have to go into bios and configure the ram. some boards want you to do that every time you change the ram and, althou, most of the time the bios has the ram configured properly you still have to "exit saving changes". Another possibility is that you bumped the video card while playing with the ram. Make sure its still fully seated at both ends and, if you have PSU power to the card the plug is snug in the connector. More than likely you bought some ram that isn't compatible with your board or your other ram.
When installing ram you should push it in until you clear a click at both ends and the end clips should close and lock the ram into place automatically. You can actually push the ram in and close the end clips by hand when the ram isn't fully seated. Always listen for the 2 clicks when installing a stick of ram.

thanks for the post.

Read up about my mobo. It is able to hold 4 gigs of ram. so that isn't the problem. Anyways, will try out the above post suggestions.

Oh man...pretty wierd that it doesn't work anymore even when you put only the original sticks in.

That's pretty fucked up, hopefully some of these more experienced guys can help you solve it.

*tries to dig around*

This happened to my PC awhile back, I gave up : ( it wasent quite the same scenario but I would recommend taking your IDE out and finding a bros Pc to pop it in and transfer your files. I wish I had something more helpfull to say. But it seems every idea Ive had has been taken. I hope it all works out. : /

Thx for everyone's input. After many ups and downs. My PC is running now, with internet connection again!

Notes for those that get new ram.

Of course the same speed and type

Unplug and make sure you put it in firmly till the locks snap, in the right place. Make sure to put them in accordingly for dual channel.

Upon restarting the comp. Load up setup defaults. then it should start up fine.

If you get the black screen like me. Clean the comp, make sure everything is plugged in snug and nothing is fried. CHECK UR BIOS.

Next I'd suggest unplugging and making sure there is no static involved on the surface you're working on. Reset the CMOS. (Just lifting and resetting some pins)

Also, you can take out the battery, leave it out for a minute or two, or more. and stick it back in.

Hopefully it starts up fine. Load up the default setttings is important.

Again thx !
