Making XP A bit Faster.

Storm's Tut on making XP a bit faster.
  • Using Old Programs
  • Downgrading XP's Graphics
  • Cleaning Up XP
  • Notes
[1]----------------Using Old Programs---\
If you're a user of MSN or Winamp, i'd suggest using these programs instead
cause they take up less resources and therefore making your comp a bit faster.

-----MSN Messenger 7.5|
If you're on XP, and you want to use 7.5, then you'll get an "you need to update in order to continue" error.
However I did some googling and found a simple but effective by-pass.

1, Download and install MSN Messenger 7.5:
http://download.oldversion.com/msnm75.exe

2, Once installed go to the MSN Messenger dir.(Usualy C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger)

3, Right click msnmsgr.exe and click propertys

4, once you've done that click the "Compatibility" tab, check "run this program in compatibility mode for:" and select "Windows 2000".

It should run perfectly now.

-----Winamp 2.95|
1, Download and install, should work fine from the start.
http://download.oldversion.com/winamp295.exe

[2]----------------Downgrading XP's Graphics---\

Alright, for starters. This MIGHT or MIGHT NOT help, but right click your desktop, click appearance, and switch the theme to
"windows classic style"

[3]----------------Cleaning Up XP(Shouldn't be needed on brand new pc's)---\
1, Download CCleaner then analyze and run the cleaner. After that "scan for issues in the Registry part of CCleaner.
If anything shows up fix the problem, but make sure to keep a backup just in case.

2, defrag your harddrive.
(If you don't know how right click your C drive > Propertys > Tools > Defragment Now)

3, Clean your harddrive by deleting old, unused programs.

4, OPTIONAL!:
I would also only reccommend doing this if you know a thing or two about computers, don't just randomly uncheck shit. Also, google could help alot while doing it.

Click Start > Run > msconfig
Click startup and uncheck everything you don't need at startup(like some video program or some shit.) Only uncheck stuff you know about, and like i said above GOOGLE is your friend.

The REGCLEAN utility from Microsoft cleans your system registry of unnecessary entries that are created when you install or remove programs on your computer. Sometimes an "orphaned" registry entry can confuse Windows during startup and cause a delay. And in general, slimming down your registry will make Windows run faster. You can download REGCLEAN here![/color]. Note: This program is no longer officially supported by Microsoft, but many users report that it works fine on Windows XP systems. You can also try RegSeeker which is a highly rated registry cleaner.

This setting gives a boost to priority of foreground applications. In very overly-simplified terms, what you see on the screen gets more attention from the CPU than what you can't.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\PriorityControl]
"Win32PrioritySeparation"=dword:00000026

These allow you to end tasks faster, shut down faster and speed up the menu display:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop]
"ForegroundLockTimeout"=dword:00000000
"HungAppTimeout"="4000"
"MenuShowDelay"="200"
"WaitToKillAppTimeout"="5000"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control]
"WaitToKillServiceTimeout"="5000"

[4]----------------Notes---\
I wouldn't reccommend doing this unless you knew what you was doing and or would willing to be making a few sacrifices for the good of speed.
I also think I did something else, but I forgot what it was. If I remember i'll add it. And if anyone gots anything they'd like to add, tell me. =]

Why is Blaze the led by of computer place instead of brandon 2  or someone else who publicly stones people with their computer knowledge?

It says you're the led by on the front of the computer talk forum.

Making you the led by for the purpose of one topic is silly. You don't need mod powers to make sure people use thumbnails, just put a note in the first post, in a large, bright font.
