Help, Computer Build
« on: September 07, 2007, 09:12:53 PM »
I want to build a computer but I have no idea where to start.

I have only $500 USD at the moment, but I'm going to be making up to $200 USD per week now, so don't let price be a factor. I can be patient.

how much are you willing to spend?

And do you need things like a monitor, keyboard, mouse, and stuff like that?

I have a decent keyboard and mouse. Speakers could be better. Tube monitor, 16", 1280x1024.

But I definitely need:

a better processor
more memory
more RAM
better sound card
better graphics card

etc.

But also, some of the stuff I have belong to my dad's work, so I can't take them with me when I move out.

Also, I can't watch HQ vids or play some PC games.

Obviously I want this to not be a problem anymore, by the time GTA IV comes out.

thanks for the links, some of those reviews mentioned others being better, etc.

So all I need to do is Buy the case, and put everything else in it? (except for the monitor)

Motherboard
Processor
RAM
Graphics Card
Power Supply
Hard Drive
Optical Drive

that's all I need?

yep

and dont look at customer reviews, their not really that reliable. if you want reviews just google the part and then "review" at the end to see a real review

alright, which ones should come first in my list of priorities?

I'll put the monitor last, because mine's fine, and I probably wouldn't want to switch to a flat screen anyway.

what about sound?

the motherboard has an on-board sound card that works great, but you can buy a PCI sound card if you really want.

and this should be your priority:

CPU>Graphics Card>Motherboard>Ram>Hard Drives>PSU> etc.

you should put most of your money on the graphics card or CPU

CPU = Computer Process Unit, PSU = Power Supply Unit. For later questions:

GPU = Graphic Process Unit.

I know what it stands for (actually I believe it's Central Processing Unit) but what is it? It's not listed in the parts.

Edit: Oh... processor.

Take the graphic card with more memory if you want to use a 22'' screen. Else just go for a 19''. 22'' is riduculous.
