Need help with choosing parts for a new pc
« on: January 26, 2014, 11:00:53 AM »
This is what I choosed so far:

http://fr.pcpartpicker.com/p/2F8Ee

I don't know much about PC's, I choosed it basing on the reviews and some googling. Seems ok to me but I need professional opinion. It will be mostly for gaming, frapsing, video editing and some general stuff.

The configuration isn't bad, but may I ask why you are building a system with components of the previous generation (Intel & NVIDIA)? Also, are you going to overclock? I'm quite sure RAM with such high heatspreaders won't fit below that big CPU cooler.

I just assumed you'd overclock and put this together for approximately the same budget:
https://www.mindfactory.de/shopping_cart.php/basket_action/load_basket_extern/id/787728220f3c2e1b2774af07840da77c5ef062a4f59d14296e6

- Silent case
- Better SSD
- More storage
- Low profile RAM
- Stronger GPU
- Good modular PSU

If you're not going to overclock, you should get a H87 or H81 motherboard instead alongside an i7 4770 (non-K) or Xeon e3 1230v3 CPU. The spared cash could maybe be invested to even afford a GTX 780 (doubts though).

I don't know man, I don't even know the difference :/ I don't think I will overclock.
Here, I changed some stuff, thanks for your suggestions:

How is it now?

Still this. Just get low profile sticks if you badly want that CPU cooler.

Also don't get a mATX board. Check out Gigabyte's H87-HD3 model since you won't overclock.

Asus' GTX 770 has a slightly lower boost clock than Gigabyte's, but you're good to go with either of them.

You should use a PSU calculator and see if 500 W is enough for it altogether, I think that could be a close call.

The WD Black is all fine but a little expensive imo. Samsung and Seagate are producing good storage devices too. WD's warranty with 5 years is awesome though.

The problem is I can't find them on this website. I don't think they are available in France. Could you help me choose something from the list?

Yup, there is "Estimated Wattage" and it says from 110W to 427W so it's cool I guess.

I chose it because it was recommended somewhere by Fraps.

I hate that pcpartpicker site big time. Just a little selection and partly expensive (maybe just FR in general?).

http://fr.pcpartpicker.com/p/2IbuL

- Cheaper and more efficient CPU cooler which still fits the case
- Still the i7 since those fucks don't offer Xeon CPUs
- Z87 motherboard now... the H87 selection is shit and the weaker boards cost almost the same as the Z87 ones lol
- Corsair Vengeance LP (LP = low profile btw)

I wouldn't trust that Watts estimation thing at all, but I didn't notice it's a 80+ gold PSU. Should be fine I assume, but I would still manually check it with a calculator to be sure.

Any modern HDD will handle Fraps' recording. They basically just suggest having a fast HDD. Black & Barracuda are about the same in terms of speeds.
In the past I've been writing 1080p footage to an external USB 2.0 320 GB HDD with a 8 year old Intel D830 CPU to give you a clue.

Yeah man a lot of stuff is not avaliable in France, and everything's more expensive. Hell, I live in a city that borders with Germany and so I go there at least once per week to buy cigarettes and shit. Well big thank you for helping me out, maybe I'll look for the H87 board somewhere else later.

To be honest, a 2gb graphics card will need to be upgraded pretty soon after bought. Considering that gaming companies are starting to change the way they make computer games to allow for higher end graphics and smoother gameplay. I recommend getting around 3gb or 4gb depending on your price range. I currently have a HD Radeon 7800 series overclocked to 5.8gbs and I may never need to upgrade my graphics card again.

But eh, it comes down to how much you're willing to spend. Also, considering you seem to want to use the pc for more video editing and frapsing, I recommend a faster processor. Simply because it allows for faster loading and widens up your multi tasking ability. But once again they are pretty pricey.

I'm not much of a pc wiz as you can probably tell so don't quote me on any of this shit, all I know is my computer and the way it handles in comparison to what people want a computer for.

Pretty much:
Want to video record and do editing? Your main focus should be processor and RAM.
Want it for gaming? Your main focus should be graphics card.

Hope I've helped. :P

Would also consider a 3GB VRAM graphics card if you haven't already bought your PC. A 2GB card is great though. I'm currently running an EVGA GTX 770 2GB SC edition, with additional overclocking, and I can max out any game well in excess of 60fps. If you're doing video editing, I would go for the 4770k instead of the 4770 (k = hyperthreading, which is a big deal for non linear editing programs).

2 GB VRAM are just fine, unless you run multiple monitors. My GTX 660 Ti also has "just" 2 GB to feed 2 monitors, both running at 1920x1080 and I'm all fine with it. Still running everything maxed out, unless unnecessarily high AA is manually forced using the driver. Even the GTX 780 Ti has "just" 3 GB VRAM, yet it has beast performance in games. And Airbrush you will have to upgrade your GPU sooner or later too, depending on what GFX settings you're satisfied with of course. The GPU is usually the first component to be upgraded.

And Shadowsniper is wrong on that HyperThreading thing. Intel's "K" models are just unlocked, means you can easily overclock them via multiplier in addition with a Z-chipset motherboard using the BIOS. The i7 4770 (non-K) already has HyperThreading included, which surely is a nice-to-have thing for multi-threaded software. Also it's one of the fastest desktop Haswell CPUs and does good on all aspects. Only the workstation/server CPUs are noticeably faster. Intel CPUs handle up to 1600 Mhz RAM, so no point in going for any faster modules. Even if you OC your RAM to 2 Ghz +, the performance increase is ridiculously low (unless you're using an iGPU for example).

Like I said Rusch I'm not a PC wiz, I do know that you have to eventually upgrade some components, just like consoles and any other form of technology. But what I mean is, hypothetically, I won't have to upgrade it for a long time given it remains stable due to the power it provides. I'll still be running games and other functions smoothly at max settings with little to no lag for a long time 'if' it remains stable. Obviously it won't because technology is not built to last.

I'm just throwing some things out there that have come handy to me, I don't know the in depth mechanics behind it, I'm just talking from experience.
