that might be a little extreme, but if you're truly an audiophile an ipod touch loaded up with some 320k mp3s, a mini amp, and a decent pair of headphones would be an amazing value

despite your feelings towards apple they make decent music players, the touch being extra awesome for the high res video playback and wifi

Actually the 320 kbps makes some songs much better to listen to. For example let's say when I'm listening to a rock song I don't really feel the difference between 192 and 320 kbps, but when I listen to drum and bass/dubstep/ambient/psytrance it makes a huge difference, so yeah.
Also I can't really help you since I'm listening to music on my mobile phone, so good luck with satisfying your needs!
