next time, before you rush into reformatting, run some diagnostic software from a bootable cd (your pc or hd should have come with this) to make sure the hard drive is actually the problem otherwise you could reformat when it's not gonna solve anything. from what you described, i was gonna say it sounds like a memory problem. but it's really hard to tell when you don't have the system in front of you.
