^ Oh, just from a random pick from Deviantart.  

@ Jessrocked: It's of course necessary that you get rid of the right side of the picture; you'll have to smudge it with the background. First get a light source on the top. Then smudge the right edge of the picture away (to right corner above), so that the black (right on canvas) and white (top of canvas) merge with each other. It will take you some time maybe before you do it correctly. And this is my first tut, so it could be that I said something wrong in the tut. ^^

yes, but when i smudge it, it looks different... is there a particular setting to the smudge tool?

I don't remember the settings of that particular smudge. Just play a bit with the opacity of the smudge brush, the settings of the brush (scattering etc.) and the brush (I used a hair smudge brush, just look on deviantart for those) itself. I'm sure you will have something nice after a couple of minutes.
