I completely uninstalled iTunes and Quicktime because they basically take over my whole computer, and open files even though I didn't allow them to, but this is still happened for my .mp4 videos

Are you sure you didn't click the box that says "allow iTunes/quicktime to be my default player for all media" or whatever when you installed them?

There must be an option in VLC to make it open all MP4 videos.

Choose VLC to open that type of file instead of Apple Quicktime and if you ever need to view .mov or other Quicktime-y files, just download Quicktime Alternative. It's totally free and when you should need to uninstall it, it deletes any trace of it ever being on your computer, even from the registry.

hold down left shift key and right click a file which you want to open with VLC instead of quicktime, now select "Open With..." > "Select" (On the bottom) and select VLC from the list. Make sure you check "Always open with this program"

next time you uninstall something, do it using the system control panel or even better get a tool which compares hdd / reg content - thats a great way of removing something 100%ly

it's still gay and stuff, the icon is the quicktime icon, but it opens with VLC. how can i change it to the VLC icon?

Just right click the file and go to open with and select the media player that you want to open the file with, also make sure you check at the bottom, "Always use this program to open these types of files or something" and then press ok.

Also right click and press Refresh.
