Overclocking shortening life span of CPU/GPU?
« on: May 06, 2007, 04:52:06 PM »
Hey guys, I was just wondering if you guys could answer something.

If you overclock your CPU or GPU, does that shorten the lifespan of it? And by how long?

For example, im gonna get an Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 overclocked to 3.4 GHZ (2.4GHZ original) and an ATI Radeon X1950 XTX overclocked to 850 MHZ (600 MHZ original).

but the temperatures are very cool, 45 degrees for the Core 2 under full load, and about 50 for the GPU

they have custom coolers on them too, and there running very cool

Any ideas on if this will shorten the lifespan of my stuff?

thanks

I don't think so . Aslong as it is cool enough it shouldnt be dangerous.

It isn't dangerous.

Its like with everything. If a old lady could drive in a car in 10 years before it breaks and you give it to a 20 years old man who burns rubber and all that with it it will not work in 10 years.

Overclocking the core2duo seems kinda useless, unless you got some big plans with it. It's fast enough as it is! And most aplications don't even use the power it has got, just clock it when you need it.

I think so too... And also try out the stability.. The higher it's overclocked, the more unstable it is.. And I think that your CPU and GPU is already good enough as it is.. Especially the E6600..

i don't want to be a bitch orso but he bought the stuff from me ...
its really good stuff nice cooled no overheating its even cooler overclocked with custom cooling then stock on stock cooling ...
so and the overclocking of the E6600 made a difference i had more fps in the 3dmark06 and the overclocking of the x1950XTX was a really big difference since its a huge clock

x2

but yes, of course it shortens the life span. to wich extent...well, that depends. it's safe to say you'll change your computer completely before it breaks down though.

it will shorten the life span.

it will probably take 6 years off the life span depending on the cooling and % of overclock
BUT!

it still wont die before you are in a situation where you need to upgrade, your Core 2 Duo will be like a Pentium 2 compared to the newer tech before it dies.

dont worry about it.
