how much time do you invest in a stunt before walking away? i spent 9 solid hours today trying to land one trick that shouldnt even be that hard. i feel like i've almost given myself an ulcer at this point, but the thought of walking away from it is even more maddening than staring at the same ledge for an entire day. i know i just need to take a break and come back with a clear head, but how much time is too much time? have you ever just had to walk away from a stunt and say fuck it?

how much time is too much time?
When it's literally too painful(physically and mentally) to keep going, it's time to move on.
If you still have a burning desire to keep trying the stunt you should obviously still go for it.
Also sometimes it's a better idea to spend a couple hours a day for about a week trying a stunt instead of going all in and trying to land it in one go.
-
If I know it's possible, I never quit. Though it better be worth the effort, I won't put to much effort into a shitty stunt.

lol i think i was actually on my knees in front of the tv at one point asking god why.
kegdog, it was that fucking 3x thrust at the casino. i honestly don't know if i can look at that fucking stair set again without clawing my eyes out. please go land it so i can quit.

Really depends on the stunt for me. If it's fun to try I'll most likely never give in until I land it. If it's a pain to try I'll give up before I've even gotten a good attempt. The thing that probably kills spots for me the most is the run up, if the run up is harder than the actual stunt it's not fun at all to try, cause you rarely actually get to try. And usually, I sit on a few spots so if I get tired of one I'll just go try another and come back to the other one later if I really want to land it. I've been trying spots literally for years and years (in VC at least). Just recently landed something I've been trying since 2008 :a-cheer:

I spent 12 hours on one stunt recently, and put it down and walked away. It's definitely doable, but I stopped enjoying it. Most of the time I can get lost in the repetitiveness and find it ridiculously relaxing, but after too long I just get bored. I also feel like I'm wasting my time on something when I could be doing tons of other different stunts.
I'd still love to get this, but would be equally impressed to see anyone else get it...

yeah i woke up this morning and i feel better about walking away from it. i think i'm going to employ a 2-3 hour time limit on a stunt before taking a break in the future. i'd rather take a break and regroup then end up hating the spot forever.
-
damn it's amazing how many stunts you can get done somedays and how long it takes for others. after spending all day on one grind yesterday and having to walk away, i found a new bump to roof today that i'm pretty sure has never been done. i knocked that shit out in less than 2 hours and then spent two hours getting the feel for (and almost landing) a precision i've been staring at for a month. i don't know why i spent so much time on a grind or why the hell it was so damn difficult to land. i guess sometimes it's the simplest looking tricks that are the hardest to land.
oh yeah, in between all that i found a new wall ride spot and killed it within 20 minutes.

fuck, so close. i had one of these today. your heart just kinda sinks huh

Well, the stunt that took the longest to me (I don't now how many hours I spent on it), I didn't even know it was possible until 10 minutes before hitting the stunt, because I finally landed the roof but bailed, 10 minutes later I hit it. But the thign is I had fun with that stunt, and it was really worth it. Some stunts may be sick, but they may not be worth the effort, but I think after like 10 hours of hitting a stunt you can tell if it's possible or not, even if you didn't get close.

In V is reach the point where I want to walk away much quicker than in VC, but I guess it will change when I can get my hands on a decent teleporter. In VC I find it hard to walk away when I know a stunt is easy but it just won't happen. Those are the only moments that I find frustrating (and bailing a spot you've had for years R.I.P). In terms of hours of trying, completely depends on the spot. My max for one day is 7 hours straight on a single spot (and landing it, prefinisher of my taxi solo). I just didn't get bored of it. But it's better to just come back another day and try it over the course of a week instead of 1 day. Mentally and physically :ajaja: I rarely reach 4 hours a day of stunting anyway, even on weekends. During normal weekdays 2 hours is already a shitload :P
-
I've never walked away from a stunt. In VC I've spent well over 24 hours on a single stunt. I know Neo did the same. I remember chatting with ATS where Neo and I were pretty infuriated with our stunts.
I do still have 2 stunts I haven't landed, 1 in VC and 1 in SAiVC. I didn't walk away from those though, I just stopped playing over time. Those stunts have taken days out of my life though <.<...
For those who might ask:
VC- Pizzaboy Stoppie Triple Airgrab (no groundgrabs or garbage like that)
SAiVC- P2B Krail Triple Grind
I haven't stunted GTA:V yet but I know that my patience will be much lower. I don't really have the same amount of free time I had. Not having a decent teleporter will make it a lot more frustrating too.
-
yeah i don't think i have the power to walk away entirely. i'm just puttin it in the trick bank and i'll head back when i', good and ready. thanks for the encouragement guys.
-
I've taken extensive breaks when trying a hard stunt. Tried to land a few fun stunts, a few good looking things (style can outweigh difficulty sometimes IMO) and then go back to stunt a week later when I feel better about the game.
My advice is to not give your stunts away though. If the other person gets a lucky landing and beats you to it, you'll resent them.

GTA V - 160+ Hours of fails (ft. VaNilla) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AIhxOtr92zM#ws)
Really depends on the stunt. This stunt I had was done within 2-3 weeks of playing every single day (Accumulating to 160+ hours) But also, that was when I have lots and lots of time as it was my holidays. This was also the last stunt to be landed before the actual video (SUPERNUVA) should be released.
Run up was totally fucked up as it was very narrow and difficult to control at high speed, not to mention hitting the bump accurately as well. Sometimes, you get run up and bump successful, but it doesn't go as high. This is where timing/speed comes to play. So yeah, it was very time consuming, but it seemed to be very worth having this landed. Simon stated that if you keep messing up the run up making you not able to try much, you'd probably just walk away from the stunt. However, it wasn't the case for this particular stunt as I thought (& others too) it was too much of a waste not landing it knowing that it's actually possible. In the end, I managed to land a stunt which is super worth it after hundreds of hours. That's why I got the best stunt of the year in GTAV (Not boasting).
Overall, just think whether the time you're wasting for the stunt is worth it compared to the level of difficulty of the stunt. If it takes too much time but isn't that impressive anyways, then you might wanna give it up. But you should be aware that luck is a factor to land a stunt so it really depends. :)

Off topic... but how do you glide like that? I've never glided that far and straight before. It'd be really nice to know for a stunt I've been attempting.

I think it's more important to get a good run up and bump, make sure you get as much speed out of the runup as possible, so wheely as much as you can and hope for a good bump, gliding is the easy part.

It's so entertaining to see a stunter's mind in progress. Every single time you hit the bridge, you knew exactly what to do to avoid bailing, unfortunately that wasn't enough. Also, felt bad for you at 1:30 hahahahaha
@topic: Stunting requires as much practice/determination as learning to play a song in guitar. If you try it for 12 hours straight, you'll eventually manage to hit it, but it's just not healthy for you. You'll get stressed, feel bad, get annoyed and start desbeliefing your skill level.
My recommendation is to always have a few stunts to make a rotation between spots. Once you start getting stressed with one, move on. When you feel confident again or feel like trying it again, do so. Don't torture yourself, otherwise stunting will start to feel like a painful experience, when it's supposed to be a fun one.
I guess the stunt i've most spent time on V so far is this one: https://www.dropbox.com/s/zyoc2kin3wc6zgt/Stunt%2030.3gp (https://www.dropbox.com/s/zyoc2kin3wc6zgt/Stunt%2030.3gp)
Can't remember which video that is from, but when HonkMeat and I started doing the stunt races, I wanted to make sure everything we put there was doable, so I would land the ones I created before actually uploading it. This one took me 6 hours on one day and on the next, probably 6 or 8 more. When I finally did it, it felt like I got a huge weight out of my shoulders. I'm not sure why this took me so long, but once I got the hang of it, started doing it in first attempts all the time. It's much easier once you bail it, since you get that extra confidence that it actually is possible and doable.
Well, that's my advice, don't torture yourself. Try it as much as you feel like, once you get bored, move on and when you regain your confidence, move back to it

thanks for the wise words and encouragement. i am definitely going to start keepin a bag of tricks im working on, and cycling between them when frustrated. i'm just getting into real stunting, so i was a little bit naive as to how long some of these better stunts really took.

That was exactly the case for that particular stunt  I tried it for like 30 minutes, bumped it maybe twice and didn't even get halfway towards the bridge (lower part). Not at all fun to try, which is why I walked away from it early. Although, much much kudos to you for sticking with it, personally I could never have endured it.

That's what I was saying, whenever I try a stunt and bail for the first time I don't get angry, i laugh and get happy that I finally got all that I needed in the stunt except the landing, which isn't a big deal for me because I don't really do precisions.

Back when stunts were plentiful, i walked away from a few stunts that i wasnt super keen on. These days, if it pisses me off after a while, i just move onto something else and come back to it later.
