I found a VERY simple fix over google.
The problem is rather famous. While using Vegas 9.0d-e (or even more recent versions), you receive the error message "unrecognised frame format, please install the latest version of fraps" upon importing AVI-files recorded with fraps.
Other symptoms of this problem are:
- a ridiculously slow booting vegas
- vegas taking very long to import AVI files (as opposed to instant, which it should do)
- long waiting times upon opening projects.
- rendering errors (black frames) and crashes upon rendering
Here's the fix:
you need to acquire the file "aviplug.dll" located in .../Vegas/FileIO Plug-Ins/aviplug/ from a vegas PRIOR to vegas 9.0d. it must be vegas 9.0c or older. now use that older .dll you got to replace the one in your vegas version and your problems will be gone.
works for me in 9.0e and has been reported to work in lots of others. just make a backup and test it. :)
fix was found here:

Cheers!

Propably shouldnt be pinned just yet. Ive just encountered some errors, again. Although the fix is speeding up vegas times a million, i occassionally still get black clips and messed up transitions whihc can only be fixed be re-opening the project.

Yeah I have had the transition issues, but I just got rid of vegas 9,10,11 and 12 and get 8.1 or lower. Just download the 3rd party plugs you need. I only use the higher versions of vegas for other forms of video import. (other than games/fraps)
But this is good information, wish I had it before I did all of that :p
