Well Before I insert my thoughts I kind of want to know yours on this whole "new metal vs old metal"
And maybe you have your own bands but me my thoughts would be around
Trivium or Iron maiden
Underoath or ACDC
All that remains or Black sabbath
Kind of thing.
-
I don't get it :hmm:
You mean to discuss what's better with new Metal compared to old Metal and on the contrary?
I mean, you put up some bands and we're going to compare them?
-
I mean What are your thoughts on the two. some say new is better some say old is better.
So it's pretty much share your opinion on the whole thing and genres
-
I like the old school more but there are some great new bands in the actual scene too (Mastodon , Trivium , As i lay dying....) but the best bands from me are still active (Metallica , Iron Maiden , Alice in Chains , RATM...)
-
They're too different to compare me thinks, I can't stand those 3 new bands you posted but I don't really care for the older ones either :/
-
Black Sabbath wrote every riff, anything else is just rip-off :ajaja:
For me it's quite impossible to compare Metal bands, it's like apples and pears.
It's not even easy to scratch the surface and superficial compare new and old bands. It would be the same answers all over.
Or is it just me?
-
I dunno most of them are pretty samey so
-
It is hard to compare them, as the metal of today would not be the metal of today if it wasn't for the influence of oldschool metal. So say if i had to give my opinion of whether old or modern music of the big 4 thrash bands, I would probably say some of old and some of new. Like Slayer and Metallica's original stuff is pretty godly, but I still love death magnetic. Overal if I HAD to choose though. Probably newage metal, due to such a broader range of metal..
-
As MaCi said, you can't really compare those two, because if there were no "old" metal bands, there wouldn't be any of the new ones.

There is no metal band better than Opeth imo.
I think the next song is the best metal song EVER made, fucking legendary.
Opeth - Blackwater Park (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h2F66kQSsek#ws)
This one is also cool.
Opeth - Ghost of Perdition (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lk6Q4FpW-sY#)
-
I cannot stand songs with that horrible screaming. Thats my opinion ofc.

I can respect that as long as you respect others who enjoy it :3
meh I just don't really like people who insult other's music interests not saying you are though :)
-
Almost everything that's made in the last decade is quite shit imo. I mean the mainstream stuff.
-
It's a continuum and it always had both good and bad shit.
-
Black rose Immortal by Opeth is godly
-
It is an amazing song indeed, but I doubt there are many people here who actually enjoy 20 minute songs. I'm glad there's someone here who knows Opeth too. Too many people who never heard of them die everyday. :(
It's a shame people don't make the difference between good and bad metal, it's not their fault though, way too many shitty bands emerged from nowhere, became famous and put the good bands on the second place. That's why most of people believe old bands are better than new ones, that is totally untrue imo.

Opeth: great melody, bad voice. :|

o'rly
Opeth - BeNighted (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jDIIGsf-i_g#noexternalembed) <<< check this one first. It's a ballad though.
This one is headbangable and has mostly clean vocals.
Opeth - Reverie/Harlequin Forest (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MnVqJLnTMek#)

Well it seems most of the ideas have been put it so I guess I'll fill in mine.
Honestly, I'm probably a walking contradiction, so try to keep up.
I really think this whole thing is ridiculous. I started this because I was looking for something (forgot) that had to do with rock/song. And I ended up on a site where this guy, who apparently knows what he's talking about since he took a major or something in music, constantly bag on new rock/metal.
So instead of finding some way on the internet to personally flame him I wanted to hear other's thoughts on it first.
I myself think there is really no point to be making a big deal of these types of things. I mean I can say I think old rock/metal sucks, but I can't say old rock/metal sucks. mostly because it would be a lie. It's all opionated and other than that I find it a good thing that old rock/metal came before current songs, it means I've grown up knowing what I currently like and stuff.
Here's where I'm a contradiction. I say old sucks but I also say there's nothing better than the oldies.
Before I got on this topic and while typing this I went back to my old playlist of songs that I have literally RAPED one way or another.
Honestly I miss the times when I first discovered them when I would check my mp3 and see 'played this song 150+ times' or 'most played songs in a list of 1-10' playing old games in my old noobie playhouse :D
So basically I don't know why there are so many people bagging on new rock/metal I find it's more of new genre listeners being more passerby and nonchalant and oldies hating on what rock/metal has become. I mean I myself would be proud of the way it has evolved.
But yeah
