Title: Linux or Vista
Post by: Cody on July 16, 2008, 11:54:03 AM
I'm planning on dual booting with another OS when I get an XP disk, which one should I go with?
I hate vista to all hell so i'm more leaning to Ubuntu, but i've never used any form of linux before.

VOTEVOTEVOTEVOTEVOTEVOTEVOTEVOTEVOTEVOTEVOTEVOTEVOTEVOTEVOTEVOTEVOTEVOTE!

Ubuntu is pretty easy to get into, it's probably the most user-friendly form of Linux. I had no experience with Linux when I first got Ubuntu but I got the hang of it in no time. It's actually much more intuitive to use than Windows IMO. The community is really helpful too if you get stuck.

Vista is still pretty much useless at this point, XP is better for most things.

Don't spend any money on vista, nor spend any time on it. I recommend Fedora instead of ubuntu tho, but its more aimed at developers I think...
Small note:
Fedora is the distro. which most of the developers seem to use, so new software usually appears on Fedora first (same for wine updates) - but the installation process for each application is kinda hard because its from developers, for developers. At the end of the chain there is usually someone who makes a setup or better binary for the application so even Ubuntu users know how it works

Actually, Vista was a total flop. They made it just to get more money and XP off the markets. Why? Because when the Windows 7 comes out, everyone needs to buy it to play the latest games or such. Or they can stay with XP, since Vista was just a "beta -version" of the Windows 7. Which is also called Windows Vienna. Do I need to say more?

Dun care about this anymore.

I got XP back and I don't plan on dual booting it anytime soon, like I thought I was going to.

I started using Vista Ultimate ed. out of boredom, and curiousity. To be honest, it isn't that bad at all. For a normal user (I geuss I am a pretty everage user) it doesn't have really big down sides. Everything works, and it looks pretty cool. Why is everyone hating on it anyways? Cause you have to disable some stupid notifications? I don't get the fuss cause it works fine for me.

It didn't work fine for me. =/

Little to NONE of my games worked, plus I got memory full errors when I had firefox + winamp + msn open. Now I can have firefox + winamp + msn + GUNZ and not get a damn thing.

How much RAM you got? Because Vista needs atleast 2GB's of RAM to work properly.

As firefly said, Ubuntu is VERY easy to work with.

Linux = sex
Vista = masturbating to a dead dog

1gb. Prolly explains it. >_>
I'm gonna buy some more ram sometime though. I have two extra slots.

Programmers working (not anymore obviously) for microsoft said Vista's code is such a bloody mess, that even they don't understand it anymore. No wonder it's as buggy as it is.

At first, I said fuck Linux.

I would only use Linux if I would start coding etc. Linux is atm not the chooise for gamers.

Vista sucks cock, seriosly. I mean 2 gb to even be able to run it, give me a break.
Vista was: Hurried, programmed very badly, uses way to much ram to run, attempt to make more money for Microsoft, fail and the suckiest os ever.

Here is an fool proof chooise for a gamer that also programs.

Windows Xp and some form of Linux OS.

Vista and mac can go to hell.

Mac is only nice to do multimedia stuff, the rest it stinks for thanks to Mr omfg no one is allowed to make hardware for mac erection rules...

No virus for macs? Of course, because no one will bother making one, as mac is the most useless of all 3.

Actually, Mac got many security holes, but the Apple company shuts it's mouth because they don't want to ruin thier "Lol we got no virus for mac" policy.

I mean wtf, it's incredible that Apple could even allow windows to be booted on a mac.

So, I like Windows for gaming and Linux for hacking/programming.

That was like reading a spastic trying to convince himself or herself that their OS is the best. Used Vista Ultimate 64-bit with Service pack one for about a month or two now and really I have had no problems with it yet and I was also one of those people that said XP was the best and I would never use any other type of OS.

Gird3r: There are also tons of development tools for windows, if you really need gcc or anything you could use cygwin on xp, games also work fine under linux using wine etc. Personally my favorite choice is winxp for programming and linux for games because windows is usually alot slower than linux on my hardware. (And windows makes working with forms alot easier)

Okay, will think of that the day I might start trying to learn programming

Gird3r, your argument is so very very flawed.

If Mac had no virusses...

http://www.symantec.com/norton/macintosh/antivirus (http://www.symantec.com/norton/macintosh/antivirus)

Vista is a memory whore, yes, it uses a lot of memory, for what I have absolutely fuck all idea, I know that it works as a work laptop though.

Linux isn't really that great for programming this is it? I mean, look at the contrast of programs for linux, to programs for windows, in fact, programming languages as well.

Linux is open source and free. Not many OS which are like that huh? Linux also has its uses for running servers on. For example the website you are viewing right now is on Linux (Fedora to be exact).

I wouldn't really say all Mac is good for is multimedia stuff....

I mean, what can windows do which Mac can't? Play some fucking games? Its because they haven't been developed for them, doesn't mean they can't be.

Also, Mac is way way way way more advanced then windows. Who had a GUI first, Windows or Mac? Who got a lucky shot and became famous, or who worked for it? Windows or Mac?

Basically what I am saying is, you can't say Mac is only good for one thing, because that is incorrect.
Linux isn't really great for programming, its just easy to do as the community is so helpful.
Microsoft Windows has got successful by luck. Everyone knows that. That said, there luck is running out, for the past 10 years Microsoft have been focussing most of their attention on the internet, not their operating systems (which may explain the poor standard vista is currently at), for 10 years Microsoft have never been on top, first it was netscape, there answer was internet explorer, then it was Google, the only way they can beat Google at the "internet game" is to buy yahoo, but yahoo were excellent and refused Microsoft's offer.

Microsoft's only chance of beating google is to invest money into a lot of small companies and hope one of them gets big. They won't ever have the stake in the internet advertising world like they wish to.

Oh, and just for the record...
