This tutorial will hopefully learn you how to achieve the best possible quality with the wmv (Windows Media Video) format.
Step 1: You're gonna need this to be able follow the tutorial.
• The Huffyuv Codec (http://neuron2.net/www.math.berkeley.edu/benrg/huffyuv.html)
• Windows Media Encoder (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/9series/encoder/default.aspx)
Step 2:[/b] Now let's render (y)our video, i could've written pages up and down but just follow the what the pictures tells you.

Hit ok and render the movie.
Step 3: Open Windows Media Encoder and once again just follow the pics, everything is pretty simple unless your movie is in 25fps, i'll add some help for that once i find out how to.

That's all, be aware that this requires some heavy hardware for a proper playback.
-
Nice, whats the filesize for say a 1 min clip?
-
That'll be different from clip to clip cause some needs a higher bitrate but somewhere between 45-50mb wouldn't be too far away.
Keep in mind that this tutorial is for quality-freaks like me
-
Getting freaky
I'm confused you rendered @ 25fps and encoded to 30fps
-
Nice tut, but you're getting close to overkill now.

Thanks, though i don't feel it's overkill.
I download movies in the best possible quality, that way i enjoy it more than i would enjoy to watch it with poor quality... this gives the movies even more enjoyment as i see it

I do render with 25 fps, i haven't used this myself cause there's this preset in Windows Media Encoder that keeps not letting me change the fps.
-
What about the playback because some videos lag in WMP or Winamp but if you play them in VLC they play perfectly. (Except Leftovers) So if you use this tutorial will your videos lag in WMP or Winamp?
-
If you don't have problems with 720p Xvid and x264 movies you won't have a problem with this.
-
Daffy, a great add to the tutorial would be to upload an example of the outcome.
-
I can't right now and i can't say why.
-
wow... my ati radeon 9600 256mb ram... lags the 720 p : (
-
Hey, I have a question. May I know what card is better, my Radeon x300 or Plumpegg's card?
-
HQ-MQ-LQ and which file format?
-
I'd say somewhere between 250 and 300mb, maybe a bit more.
-
Nice tut, hope you work out the 25fps, so it works for SA .
-
OMG! My new favorite render
Thanks Daff
And why isnt this one pinned?
-
yeah ^
cause this works good man
i go try this for sa i guess i found some other shit for more quality if it really works ill post it
-
woot thats the best render that i ever seen
good job daffy
-
Before Step 3 i have 6 GB Movie :/ This is normal ?
And i cant make other resolution from 1280x720, i want 1280x960 :/
-
lol too easy, but nice tut.
-
There's a new one coming soon utilizing AviSynth scripts and goodies alike.
-
My PC will cry...
-
It doesn't require anymore resources for proper playback.
-
Can't wait.
I never rendered with anything but your tutorial's, lol.
-
nice tut
-
Hey guys, I'm Torque and I support this tut.
I rendered a 1024 x 768, 30 second video, it was only 15 MBs roughly and had crisp as ice quality. Nice job.
Pros:
-WMV, so everyone can watch without the hassel of downloading codecs or players
-High Quality
-Low File Size
Cons:
-Tutorial was by Daffy
Overall: I give it a 9.7
-
ah man, you just reminded me that I still have to render the GTASL 3!
THE HQ WILL TAKE FOREVER!
-
The render only took me two minutes and the conversion took me 3 minutes. I don't have a high-end PC at all so it might take you the same amount of time also.
-
Torque: Windows user can watch it without problems, now, with my brand new linux installation, I m fucked
Luckily VLC exists - however, the wmv support for unix is still a bit "bad"

the vid is likely to be 20 minutes long. That's still going to take A HUGE AMOUNT OF TIME.
-
It'll be ready at the morning if you leave it to render to night, I guess?
-
Will you get good quality just using the Huffyuv and not Media encoder?
-
Huffyuv is codec that render's your source into uncompressed file, so yeah it is good quality but too big file.
-
Ok, thanks. I am rendering a vid with Huffyuv codec now. I don't have Media encoda, and I can't download it.
-
It'll be more than 10GB's (dependive of the video's duration) so you have to use Xvid, wmv or similar codec to make it smaller.

Ok, Thanks mate. Is Xvid as easy to do as Huffyuv? Because I installed Huffyuv in seconds.
-
Yes, try some of Daffy's tutorials.
Matroska x264 Encoding (http://www.gtastunting.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=27396)
Xvid/LAME High Quality Render (http://www.gtastunting.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=17425)

Will do thanks. But I was was to download Media encoder and finish the rest of the tut above, would it improve the quality a lot more than if I just used "Huffyuv"? Sorry for asking so many question. Your knowledge is just great with this.
-
It wouldn't improve the quality, it would make the file smaller and it would decrease the quality because you can't upload a file worth 10 GB's.
-
Ok. I that case my Huffyuv gave be "MQ" - kinda like normal HQ / MQ wmv quality. Maybe, it's my fraps causing the bad quality.
-
Problem: when I say the location of the file I want to encode, I click browse, find the file then double click the file, then windows encoder kills itself and doesn't respond. Know what's causing it?
-
THat's fucking awesome
-
Daff, i have a problem, i did everything, just like in the tut but when i play the video after the whole thing it just wont play, just a black screen, why is that?
-
The problem is with your player/codecs then, get FFDshow and if it doesn't work by then, make a new topic as it's having nothing to do with this rendering itself.
-
thanks Daffy ^^
-
Thanks a lot dude.
-
Err, I have a 8800 GTS 512 mb Vram GFX card, and a duo 2.0 GHZ AMD core. Will my video lag?
-
not rly i think
-
Wil i get a 30% color loss on this aswell as with normal wmv qualities?
-
Can you view the finished project using Windows Media Player? Like all the other Vegas renders?
-
Daffy,
i did all that in the description..but,
after i rendered it in the wme it made my file a 5-10 Kb file..
so..how can i fix it?
-
(http://imgs.sk/images/fhghfhgdrhJPG-69546.jpg)
i can't encode it :( wtf with it help :(

Then i can't help you. Sorry :P

In order to install "Huffyuv" right click the "Huffyuv.ini" file and click "Install".
If you're using a 64 Bit OS or has a CPU with multiple cores, get this version of Huffyuv instead.

It's fairly safe to say this tutorial is quite outdated.
I'm using something different I can't be arsed to write a tutorial for.
